What's it like to fly with Motion controller?

I assume the MC does not have as much fine control as the FPV controller.

If you are using the FPV controller and you lose GPS and VPS will you still have control or would it drift all over similar to if the same happened with a regular controller?

I'm thinking that maybe the FPV controller would be better for me especially if I want to fly into abandoned buildings where I could lose GPS and VPS.

"Fine control" is a little hard to apply to the MC in the same way as a stick RC. The system coordinates all 4 controls (pitch/roll/yaw/height) with any movement of the MC, and to do this it must have working positioning. Forward/back and left/right tilt of the MC do not strictly map to pitch and roll.

So without any sense of where it is in space when both GPS and VPS fail, it can't calculate pitch/roll/yaw amounts to execute the command.

Similar things happen when a drone falls back to ATTI. Stick movements change to controlling tilt proportionally rather than speed, which can be very abrupt depending on other factors like wind.

So would the FPV controller which is a stick RC control the drone similar to a regular RC and would there be more control if you lose GPS and VPS, for example in an abandoned building?

I would definitely give the Motion Controller a try. It's intuitive. You can use it as a pointer to select settings and menus in the goggles. It's an absolute blast to fly with. It's very good at flying through tight spaces. The goggles and the motion controller work really well together. 👍

Thanks for this info. I would have thought that the FPV would have been better for tight spaces.

Yes, but it will behave just like the RC-N3 in N/S... That is, if positioning is lost, it will switch to ATTI, and the change from speed and positioning control to simple tilt angle control can be discontinuous.

The best way to have solid control without the positioning issue is to learn manual (rate) control, and fly that way. There is no positioning. However, it's a whole new animal compared to than N/S/ATTI, no leveling when sticks are centered... Rate vs. angle mode is a big topic in it's own right.

I have the avata 2 fly more kit but I did ended up getting the Neo motion fly kit with the new goggles n3. I wanted to learn to fly with the Neo first. What a blast I had yesterday flying it indoors , between tight spaces at my home. Yes you need to make sure to turn on your lights even during daytime for any dark rooms you may have. It was a lot of fun and something to do now during the winter months. I am very happy with the goggles N3. I think I prefer to use this instead of goggles 3. When I wear Goggles 3, I tried adjusting it so that I have no dark corners but cannot get it right. Maybe the opening is too small? I am submitting a support case with DJI to make sure this is normal. Also sometimes the image is not fused together and after a reboot it clear it. Anyone experience this with goggles 3?

With the goggles 3, I can't keep the center and the edges clear at the same time. If I move the lenses left or right, I can choose which one I want to be clear. I have NOT gotten prescription lenses for it yet, so that might be part of the problem. But the N3 goggles sound really good. They'd fit over my regular glasses which would probably solve the issue. So the N3's are on my wish list. Seems like another good thing about the N3 is that you can share them with someone else to fly your drone. With the Goggles 3, every time you hand them off to someone else, they have to do the adjustments all over again.

I too was flying the NEO around the house last night. Super fun! It's stable in flight. Feels just like a small Avata-2 to me. I had good signal going from my bedroom, down the stairs and all around the first floor. I think this drone would be perfectly usable for real estate fly throughs. I did crash a couple times, and I don't see any damage. We're having 18mph+ winds outside, so won't have a chance to fly outside for a couple days probably.

From my experience yesterday, I am really preferring the budget goggles N3 over the goggles 3 just because of the dark corners and the occasional double vision I sometimes get (image not fused together between the right and left eye). I would reboot the goggles 3 and put it back on and image is good again but with the dark corners. I removed the added forehead pad and that seems to help. I flew it from my kitchen and while sitting near my kitchen table, I flew it out of my patio door, into my back yard and into an empty Parc between trees about a block away. What a blast that was. I can see the Parc from my kitchen but the drone is so small that it was hard to spot it.

I've thought about trying to use goggles again, just not sure as before, my vertigo was do bad I had to get rid of them. If I knew of someone close that had a set to see, I'd try it again. I just hesitate to buy a set and not able to use them.

Doesn't DJI have a 7 day return policy and when Amazon gets them that's another option to try.

Good idea. I may do that

I am on DJIs notify list when they are back in stock or if Amazon.ca gets them then I will likely order from them. I have been torn between the Motion Controller and FPV controller. Video's I've watched say it's really fun to fly with the Motion controller but if you want control like a regular controller then the FPV controller is the way to go. For me I am not even sure if I will take to FPV so keeping costs down by getting the Goggles N3 and the Motion controller is the way I am leaning right now.

I think I would be ok with the Goggles so long as I can maintain a somewhat level flying pattern. It's the spins and turns that get me. In fact, there are some FPV videos that I can not watch without getting sick lol

Same here. It helps not to stay in the goggles too long or take breaks. Some of those FPV videos are not enjoyable. There's nothing more boring than nonstop excitement.

I don't think I will be doing spins and flips as it's not my flying style. I have done flips with my old Syma X8G which I still have (the one in my avatar) but not with goggles. I find after the first few flips, the novelty where's off. Also, if I get the Goggles N3 and Motion Controller it will be to complement my existing flying.

There are a couple on the Mavic Fourm that post videos using the Avanta 2 regularly and they are really enjoyable as they are able to fly in tighter areas etc.

Yes, I have seen some of them. One of the reasons why I want to try FPV with the NEO is to do exactly that. For me it doesn't have to be fast daring moves flying in and out of abandoned places or low over waterfalls, but slow deliberate and focused shots that I can use to complement the photos from my camera drones.

One of my areas of interest, is in documenting some of the early 19th century ruins that are around the area I live and to document the slow decay of more recently abandoned buildings.

Although the Avata 2 is probably a more capable drone for this purpose, the cost is too much for the occasional uses that I would use it for, that's why the NEO is more suited to my flying style and purpose.

I received my package today. Took a bit to get it all functioning. Would not take off when I got to my spot. Fingers getting colder……. Finally a take off first time with goggles n3 and mc3. My flying was “lumpy” and uneven for the first time. Get the Motion 3. It is quite amazing. For me flying the quad was easy. I actually had no problem flying standing up! I was surprised.
The hard part is figuring out how to change stuff in the goggles with the MC3 or the two buttons on the goggles. At 78 I seem to not have much “intuition” for figuring these things out. Tomorrow I will set it in the table and set the parameters up with some of the suggestions people have on their videos.

Go for it!

Congrats! I think you have to call that a successful first flight. :)
