ND Filters: NEO 2 Clip vs Adhesive Magnetic Ring

As previously discussed in this thread, I have been evaluating the performance characteristics of NEEWER ND Filters specifically for the NEO 2. In summary, I advise caution when using these filters.

Having owned DJI MAVIC and MINI platforms, the NEO 2 (and NEO) are suitable for quick use in a pinch without the need for a RC 2 or RC-N2. However, attaching a NEEWER ND Filter to the NEO 2’s Gimbal eliminates this spontaneity.

I have observed unusual behaviors in the Gimbal’s start-up tuning sequence (movement) and overall video images when the ND Filter is not securely attached to the Gimbal or the initialization start-up sequence is erratic. This results in noticeable video jitter and blur. I am accustomed to set-and-forget functionality, but the NEEWER ND Filters are unreliable, producing poor-quality video footage.

The added weight and interference of the ND Filter’s frame during the start-up and tuning sequences are contributing factors. Removing the ND Filter restores normal performance (clear, stable, and less worry).

Additionally, the Dolly Zoom Mode, when used with a ND Filter (grade 8 or above), accentuates unintentional jitter and blur.

While I acknowledge the merits and applications of ND Filters, the NEO 2’s Gimbal and design (clip) approach to the NEEWER ND Filter is a significant drawback. The mechanical clearance and weight do not guarantee a robust and reliable outcome. If the Gimbal is unstable or mechanically misaligned during the initial start-up sequence (regardless of NEEWER’s operating instructions), the results will be disappointing (as evidenced by my experiences).

Obviously, I could connect the NEO 2 to my iPhone (DJI FLY App) to confirm image and Gimbal stability, but this defeats the purpose of relying on a ND Filter when there is a potential issue with the mechanical stability and operation of the Gimbal.

I hope that none of you have encountered the observations outlined above while utilizing ND Filters (Clip Design). However, if you are experiencing video jitter and blur, please be assured that you are not alone. But if you require a 100% stable shot to capture the moment, you may consider removing the ND Filter first...or risk being disappointed in post...

PS - I wish I could share actual video images, but this is not an option from this portal. Send me a direct message / email -- I can forward a MOV file if interested on the jitter / blur (example)...

I sent mine back weeks ago. I tried with them on not even powering the Neo 2 up. Manually moving the camera up and down, and notice restrictive movement, stopping at less than full movement. It's just not worth it. And the Neo with the magnetic filters. Have one head on collision and I lost the filter. So I will not be using any nd filters on any of my Neo's. I'm going to lock the white balance at 5500 and it is what it is. Just fly and enjoy! If I want more cinematic shots, I'll use my Air 2s, Mini 4 pro, or my Avata2. All those have reliable nd filters on them. Thanks for all the info neo_gman
