Greetings Matrix escapees. Just started flying a few days ago, weather [mostly not] permitting.

Anyone know any inside venues where I can put in stick time while waiting for Spring? I will range from Mason-Dixen to VA-NC border, Atlantic to western WV.

Welcome from the Midwest. To answer your question, no, but I did use to fly a RC Corona back in the day. Very impressive what a good RC heli pilot can do with the right helicopter for sure. Welcome again to a new hobby full of fun.

Be aware of Neo downward facing IR and Visual sensors issues. DJI spec note minimum of 15LUX illumination over a textured surface. Two indoors out of control fly away events experienced. Both time flying either N or S mode. Once with the MC3 and the other with the FPV RC3 controller. Flew into too dimly lighted areas. Neo just accelerated into an obstacle with no input control response. Multiple Ytube videos of people covering the sensors with a chunk of black tape to replicate the issue even with adequate satellites acquired and high outdoors or indoors lighting.

No issues flying manual mode using the FPV RC3 even with zero satellites acquired. Something is messing up the positioning stability system of the Neo when the sensors are not working as designed. Just a Neo limitation. Personally if flying in a space similar to a basketball court. I would limit indoors Neo flying to Manual Mode. No need to be concerned with satellites locked and visual sensor issues.

Double digit hours flying the Neo outdoors. Majority in manual mode using the FPV RC3. Zero fly away issues. Wish I could say the same regarding user caused crashes.

.

I would suggest a lanyard system to help with the flight(s).

I've flown my NEO & MA2 with this impromptu rig and it helps when fumbling with the stuff before, during, and after the flight. :)

There are attachments to purchase on line that work better, but the rubber O ring worked fine for me in a pinch.

I'm using the O ring method for the NEO.

So far, so good.

Lanyard proponent. Bit like wearing your seatbelts in a vehicle. Hope you never have to make use of the hardware. But when the moment happens.

Never flew a heli. My impressions are helicopters are one of the most difficult UAS platforms to fly and master. You should consider the FPV RC3 controller and Goggle3 or N3. N, S, and M modes all become options. M mode you can tune the stick center sensitivity, max rates, and expo to your preferences. IIRC, 16m/sec max speed is easily reached. Hit +20 m/sec on a light wind day downwind run a few time. Neo is so small. To an observer it looks like it is going much faster than it is if you keep it below 2-3 meters of altitude. Manual mode allows for much higher ascent, descent speeds and angle of attacks than what S mode limits you to. 7-8 minutes of very focused attention and adrenalin rush.

Tao Wang's helicopter, the original DJI UAS incorporated his stabilization system to allow people with mega$ toy funds to more easily fly helicopters. Incorporating that tech into image capture stabilization hardware allowed him fund the development that now provide us with some incredible "toys", but at a lower than 5 digit price point.

You may want to consider gimbal stick guards or a case that protects the gimbal sticks or just remove after each use. Just take care not to cross thread the sticks. The replacement price for DJI gimbals is a bit on the high side if you can source them. Another reason for a lanyard.
IMG_1373.jpgMy cheapo diy guards for the tx used on for the computer sim. Just used a hole saw to cut and reamer to enlarge and taper the hole. Haven't got around to make a link between the two "guards". Tx sits in a bag on a shelf next to the computer.

Yes, I do wear a lanyard even when "flying" on the sim.

I had to go out to the company from which I recently retired. I asked if they wanted to do a video of the VP showing off the facilities. We put it in Follow and he walked through the various divisions. He had so much fun he plans to get one. This was all inside their building. I was not paid in any way.
