Yesterday I flew my NEO over an area lake that I often fly my larger camera drones over. I wanted to see how the NEO would do in comparison to my other larger drones (Mini 3 Pro and Mavic 3 Pro) that have longer lasting batteries and better cameras. I was surprised at how well the NEO did and at the quality of the video from a camera with a 1/2 inch sensor and a single axis gimbal. I recorded video but did not intend on publishing it but upon reviewing it, I thought the patterns that the windswept snow made on the ice, looked cool - literally. It was -6ºC.

Yeah!! The appearance of the ice is hypnotic, very cool!

I took AP pictures of a frozen lake in 2006 that I had forgotten about until I seen this post. I'll have to bundle up like the old days and give it another go.

It isn't that cold here yet and I did a shoot yesterday at 38 degrees Fahrenheit and I was freezing lol

Way too much wind chill the last few days here. I've been thinking about my new gauntlet to run to develop my coronation with the MC3.

brrrrrrrrrr.. man that is cold!
Usually the wind is the problem. The wind chill makes it feel much colder. On the day I did the video, it was calm so it didn’t feel that cold. Today is a different story.

Thanks. It’s even colder today at -13C (8.6F).

Pretty snow patterns. Safe enough ice thickness to walk on? Calm day? For those S of N45. It's not the actual temp. It's the windchill:).

N breeze and -5C at sunrise today. Lake effect "warmth". Sometimes the wind warms things up. Head 100km west to western tip of L. Superior-15C. Town inland 50km was reading -20C. Surface water temp. is still abnormally too warm. Might be a reflection of the unusually warmer deep waters. Warming waters has been a concerning trend over the past couple decades. But now more pronounced. Might be another year with minimal or no ice on Lake Superior. Would enjoy Spring sessions flying on the ice. No trees to hit:). Last ice session off the local beach was pre-Pandemic.

I'm not sure when that lake froze up, but we previously had mild weather so I wouldn't chance walking on the ice at this time especially since we had a few days of mild weather. It was a calm on the day I shot the video.

We have 3 lakes nearby, two are already frozen over including the one in the video. The one I live closest to (5 min walk) is a large lake so it has not frozen over yet. Last year, it did not freeze over until near the end of January. The video I shot below shows the freeze-up of Kempenfelt Bay last January, which is a large bay on Lake Simcoe. You can see that people are on the ice, fishing shortly after it froze over. At that point the ice would not be very thick. We continued to have mild weather and very little snow for the whole winter. This year seems to be a bit better, so far!!

Wow Chris, really cool stuff!

You were very considered and careful in making your neo purchase. I'm having quite a bit of fun seeing how much fun you're having with it. I think it may have exceeded your expectations a little here and there?

You're capturing some amazing media, some of them stills which is a surprise with the Neo!

Yes, I did do lots of research before I made the NEO purchase, probably much more than either my Mavic 3 or Mini 3 Pro purchases. Since I am primarily into photography with the occasional video here and there, the camera drones were less of a risk or unknown. They involved less research because I already knew what I wanted.

The NEO presented me with the possibility (via tracking shots) to easily document my hikes/bike rides out to sites I often go to. It also presented me with the ability to shoot low and in places I would never be able to fly my other camera drones.

Probably after Christmas I will get myself the Goggles N3 and either the MC3 or FPV controller 3 to try out FPV.
