Awoke a bit late this AM. Missed my normal Lake Superior sunrise while eating breakfast. Mostly sunny -12.7C at 0800. High temp was -9C at Midnight. Took the 300 meter downhill walk to the mailbox. Bloody cold windchill. Metabolic BTUs walking uphill to house kept things warmer heading into the wind. Gale watch and warnings out on the Lake. NW to 40knots. Bit too cold and windy for little Neo and old Me.

Now down to -14C. Which is warmer than the few days forecasted highs. I think I prefer our getting to be more normal, unseasonably warm days. So do the Chickadees. They are cute fluff balls this morning stuffing themselves at the feeders. Not a good sign. They know what's coming.

We have a cold snap coming.

Monday will be a low of 4° F (-15°c) High of 12° F (-11°c).

I think the limit of the NEO is 14° F and that's probably mine too. 🥶

We had a low of 14F and 32F today and tomorrow 4F for a low and 14F for a high.

Personal preference to at most wear fingerless gloves. If sunny and no wind. Cold threshold for me is ~-2C. Sunrise temp today was -22C. Still at -22C. Feels like temp according to the Weather App is -31C. At least sunny. Maybe an indoor Neo session.

It got so cold here in Santa Cruz I just couldn't bring myself to head out in shorts and flip-flops for a little FPV at the beach. Awful day... I had to wear long pants and a sweater, inside!

My current state of status as of this morning. My parents are naturalized US Citizens, but not before I was born. So if the 14th doesn't hold water. I'm more than homeless. No nationality. If so, I technically committed a felony. Previous profession required you to be a US Citizen.

Coldest night since pre-Pandemic era. Awoke to -18F/-23C. Awoke in the night to occasional creaking rafters and trusses. Inland was significantly colder. Smoke on the water this AM.

12F this morning, tonight 7F great New England weather. RI
Balmy warm for New Englanders.

Township plow came by this AM. Not much snow fall overnight (~4"/10cm). Normally they wouldn't plow, but another snow drought year. I think they are getting bored at the garage. Took a walk down to the mailbox to clear the snowplow bank. Radiant heat of the sun made it feel relatively "warm". Plugged in the truck for tomorrow. Hopefully warm enough to go snowboarding . Still will be way too cold to fly Neo.

Nice powder day and a balmy -12C/+11F when the lifts opened. Love mid-week and apparently too cold. Zero line until after 1100. Neo would have had a difficult time . Lake effect snow falling sort of made visibility basically flat white. Guessing the visibility conditions would have set Neo into autonomous fly away mode. Sticked along the edge of the runs hugging the trees. Sweet knee deep dusty dry powder. Benefit of a few way too cold day and nights.

Unusually cold conditions has rapidly expanded the near shore ice coverage. Few years have past since able to enjoy Spring flying on the ice. If winter continues as "normal". This may be the Spring. It will be the first time to fly either the Neo or Avata2 in a wide open area free of obstructions. Outside of a few pressure ridges. Which are fun to fly around and among.

It was much warmer here today than what's it's been. Sub zero temps and windchill gets everyone's attention. It's been a long time since we've had this type of snow all at once, 12 plus inches. IMG_0098.jpeg

Was out today with NEO. It was -14C during the flight and got the ‘Preparing to Takeoff: IMU warming up’ error mid flight but flew fine. Checked battery temps from log after flight and they actually showed that the temperature went up about a degree during the flight so not sure why the error keeps occurring in temps -12C and below.

Chris

Out again today getting shots of the ice fishers. The temperatures had increased to a balmy -6C and there were no 'Preparing to Takeoff: IMU warming up errors' but did get lots of wind warnings and the little NEO was pretty tilted at points. Flew my Mini 3 Pro in the same area at the same time and it was like night and day - no wind warnings and at no point did I feel like it was struggling like the NEO was.

I really love the NEO for the autonomous tracking abilities but I have to wonder if the Flip which has the same autonomous functions will be better in the wind. I know it's not as good as Mini 3 or 4 but ...

Heading over to FlipPilots to get more info.

-14C, that is hardcore cold flying conditions. My fingers would not enjoy the pain when they start warming up.

My fingers do get cold but I keep hand warmers in my pockets and use cruise control so when flying straight I can warm up my fingers.

I got that the other day, was below 14F. Maybe near 6F. When I landed it and let it sit idle and it warmed up, took flight again and then the IMU got too cold again and the message appeared. But flying was ok. I truly think I was risking IMU malfunction.
